Teaching & Learning
The academy premises are partly open plan in style, although careful planning has enabled teaching spaces to be sufficiently spread out to enable effective single class teaching where it is desirable.
A range of teaching styles is used in every class depending on the needs of the children and the content of the curriculum. Our over-riding aim is to have well-planned, orderly and effective learning. We expect children to develop a degree of independence and responsibility for their own learning as they progress through the school.
Children are taught all the national curriculum subjects either as discrete subjects or mixed subjects (i.e. project or theme work). All work is carefully planned by staff using the school schemes of work which are designed to be progressive, well balanced, challenging and interesting. The core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science take up half of the teaching and learning time.
The younger children tend to work a more integrated day, which enables their teachers to plan for shorter attention spans and wide-ranging maturity levels. Since the introduction of the National Literacy Strategy & National Numeracy Strategy Key Stage 1 children are all taught English and Mathematics together for an appropriate period of time.
Pupils in Years 3,4 and 5 go to Ramsey Leisure Centre Pool to have swimming instruction for 10 weeks. Details are send out during the school year. The children travel by bus and we have to request a contribution towards the transport costs. We hope you will support this very important aspect of the PE Curriculum.
